...in a new Prius to turn a profit from fuel costs compared to just getting the Jag on the road (minus the faffing about with manual swaps which I didn't need to do). That increases to 273,059 miles if you're in the US with your lovely cheap fuel (even taking into account the dirt cheap cost of a Prius in the US).
You can do the maths yourself if you like.
Firstly, you need to find how much each mile will be costing you. Plug you're values into this formula:
Cost per mile = (1/ mpg )* cost per gallon
Next, you have to find the differential between these two values:
Cost per mile differential = cost per mile A - cost per mile B
Then you find the price differential between the two vehicles.
Price differential = price of vehicle A - price of vehicle B
Finally, we find out how many miles it will take to turn a profit :)
Miles required = price differential / cost per mile differential

Buying a new car is a very expensive way to save on gas.

According to my calculations, you should buy a Jag.
Feel free to come on over anytime you wish and enjoy the cheaper fuel :)

If only more people would understand that.
Actually, sod that. There'd be fewer knackered old cars for me to buy.

Thanks :) I love them too. They're right at the bottom of their depreciation curve, but I honestly think they're better looking than the classic Series XJ. A lot cleaner design.
The dream is to convert it into an estate. They made one prototype, but nothing actually came of it. Great looking thing though.

Yea I really wish people would understand this. This is why I bought a car a really really like, so I can keep it for as long as she'll let me. By not buying a new car for the next 10 years I'll save so much more money than if I were to switch to a hybrid. I may be getting 20 miles per gallon, but they are 20 fun miles per gallon. I can justify it by planning on having it for a long time.
Fuel costs may be on the rise, but they pale in comparison to buying a new car.
